A dispatch
for women
in motion.

Twice a week we send you one long piece on the work of a modern woman's life — money, cities, style, love, the ten-minute walk between them — and one short directive to slip in your back pocket.

The number you were meant to say out loud.

Every woman I know has a private number she is willing to work for and a public number she is willing to say out loud — and the gap between them is the exact amount of her life that has been quietly billed to someone else. Notes on a decade of asking, and the re-education it required.

"There is a version of you who says ninety-two the first time and is not apologising about it by the third sentence. She lives, right now, three feet behind your left shoulder. Turn around."

To edit a life is not to make it smaller. It is to make sure every thing in it earns the light it takes up.

01

The half-hour rule.

Never make an important decision in the first half-hour of your day. You are still the person who had the dream, not the person who will live it out.

02

The number, then the reason.

In any negotiation — money, weekends, borrowed apartments — state the number first. Explain after they ask. A number defended before it is questioned sounds smaller than it is.

03

One coat, one pair.

Own one coat that makes a bad day survivable and one pair of shoes you can walk twelve blocks in and still speak in a room. Everything else in the wardrobe is decoration.

04

Rooms leave, not people.

When a relationship ends, change one room in the apartment, not the whole life. The rest of you does not deserve to be renovated because someone else was.
